Who doesn't love a good throwing axe? Who doesn't love a throwing axe you made yourself? And especially one made from some really fun materials. A farrier friend was gracious enough to give us a stack of old horse rasps to use for our forging projects. Not only is the metal fantastic quality for this, but it gave an awesome texture to the piece.
The burs from the file looked incredible with the hammer marks.
Going Old School
For this project, we did not use the gas forge. We instead used a coal forge. This allowed for a much more intense and more concentrated heat. To start off, we cut off the ends of the rasp, then heated the center to bend around into the shape we wanted.
Love this shot of the flames going through the metal.
Once that was done, we cut a piece of hardened steel to use as our bit. The bit went in between the folded metal and would serve as our edge once it was filed down. But first, it had to be forge welded. Heated up and hammered to a point where the two pieces of metal fused.
The dust is from the flux, which helped keep air out and prevent slag build up during the hammering.
After it was successfully forge welded, all we had left to do was let it cool, grind it to the shape I wanted, and stick a handle on it. All together, it looked pretty gnarly.

That was a nice sound.
