A Productive Day!

Where to even begin with today. Well, let's start with some updates on the knife. I began with the hand-file to make it smoother and prettier, then we went back to the belt sander to give it the beginnings of an edge. Once these tasks were done, the knife went back in the heat and was ready for oil tempering.

I actually do not mind the dents. I think it gives the knife a lot of character, especially for a first time.

It looks a lot cleaner after it was smoothed out and sharpened.

The smell was interesting to say the least.

A Simple Little Friend

We finished the objectives for the knife relatively fast and had plenty of time left in the day. My teacher decided that we should forge a simple dragon head on the end of a rod. It is surprisingly not very hard to make that shape, with the understanding that it is not meant to be very complex. I say this, and he still turned out..."rough" shall we say.

His name is Patches and I love him.

A Stalwart Defense for a Strong Offense

Patches was completed in only a few minutes, so we had enough time to at least begin another project while the knives were cooling. So, we decided to begin work on a buckler shield. A small, circular, metal shield. We wanted to make one so that we could use a pair of plastic training swords my teacher has.

The coal forge actually gets much hotter than the gas forge.

We ended up shaping the center in this piece on the floor because it happened to be the perfect shape and easier to work.

Like I Said: "Everything is hot!"

Fun fact, metal gets very hot when you put it in a forge. It took a few days but I finally burned my finger. Nothing serious, but honestly a little funny that I have been told multiple times and still forgot. Had my right hand on the bottom of a metal rod, which was cool, and chocked up a bit too high with my left.
